On October 19, Acting US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Robert Greenan handed over a gene sequencing machine sponsored by the US Department of Defense to Cho Ray Hospital. This is one of two gene sequencing machines donated by the US to Vietnam, located at Cho Ray Hospital and Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi). The device is manufactured by Illumina, an American technology company based in San Diego, California.

Dr. Nguyen Tri Thuc, Director of Cho Ray Hospital, said that the machine helps the hospital deploy many modern techniques such as analyzing mutant genes, new virus variants that cause Covid-19 as well as virus strains. Bacteria, fungi, etc. This technology also helps in screening and early detection of genetic diseases and cancer.

“The device also contributes to supporting Cho Ray Hospital in training and transferring technology to lower-level doctors in many provinces,” said Dr. Thuc.

According to TS.BS Truong Thien Phu – Head of Microbiology Department of Cho Ray Hospital, the gene sequencing machine has the effect of analyzing and sequencing the genes of viruses, helping to promptly identify variations of the SARS-CoV2.

In addition, gene sequencing helps to detect genetic mutations and foreign genes that can cause diseases in the human body (such as cancer), or diagnose diseases of the brain and nervous system. Genetic diseases or identify cases of fungal, bacterial, etc
